Here's the fantastic letter from Billie Ognenoff, Director of Home Child Care Center, Milwaukee, WI... When I try to tell others what NWTC means to me, I get both excited and frustrated because I know the reality far surpasses any description I might come up with, no matter how heartfelt! I try to convey the sense of hope that weaves it's way through the week and leaves us energized and ready to face whatever challenges that may lie ahead. I try to make sure that they understand that this is not just a "feel good experience" that lasts for a few weeks but rather is the foundation for what sustains me when I can't be with these wise and funny people. I caution people that NWTC isn't for everyone, just for those who really want to delve deeper into the abstracts of their teaching, and not just be spoonfed ideas like at most conferences. When people ask why I go to NWTC year after year, I tell them it is because I know I will be challenged and accepted, humbled and inspired and most of all, respected. No other conference I have ever been to respects me as a learner like NWTC does. They trust that I will figure out what I really want to learn and then give me the time and people to have those conversations with... so that no matter how drained or exhausted I may have been, this time with those "kindred spirits" fills me up again so I can go back and do this important work for another year... so I can help my kids figure out what they really want to learn, and now I can give them the time to make that happen... and so it goes! Sometimes I focus on how unique NWTC is... how very few conferences could bring such a diverse group together (from ages 3 to 80!) and have every individual contribute something valuable to the experience. I tell them how we work with all different ages, in all different settings, all over the country and Canada and yet we have this amazing connection because of those few days (and fewer nights!) spent at camp... the bonds are far stronger than any differences and in fact are made stronger because of the different experiences we bring to camp!" I'm afraid I don't do it justice but will continue to share my passion for NWTC with anyone who will listen. I am literally counting the months until I can be with you amazing people again... until then I hope you continue to "take a certain perverse pleasure in being a part of creating something that defies description" (your quote Tom)! Love, Billie
